Walking Alone and Walking Apart – two novels about David and Helen Richards, both on the verge of retirement.
The prospect of leaving work to pursue your dreams should be an exciting and invigorating time of life. David and Helen are financially secure, in good health and have seen both of their girls fly the nest. David is full of plans, Helen a little more hesitant to let go of the career that defines her. As she becomes more involved in her job, he feels increasingly pushed away and looks for activities to fill his days. David is leader of the local walking group in Lancashire and plans hikes and walks. He meets Karen, a divorcee who has joined to make new friends. Even long marriages can face challenges and as the story unfolds, it emerges that this one is no exception.
In Walking Apart, the first novel in the two-part series, the setting moves from Lancashire and the Lake District to Melbourne in Australia, where a family crisis forces the couple to face their differences.
Walking Alone continues the narrative. David finds that being economical with the truth comes back to bite him. Helen seeks some space, so he sets off to walk the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain - alone. It takes his younger daughter, with her irrepressible enthusiasm and desire to get her parents back together to bring things to a conclusion.
Both books in this series, which may not yet be over, have sumptuous settings, believable characters and a depth that takes the reader beyond what is merely an engaging story.
For readers who love a setting in France, Holding On Letting Go follows the experience of two brothers, one settled with his young family and trying to make a living in the Tarn et Garonne, the other visiting with a friend. During a hot summer holiday, relationships are strengthened and decisions about the future are made. There are things to hold on to and others to let go.
Holding On Letting Go will take you to the villages of St Antonin Noble Val, Penne, Najac and Cordes sur Ciel. It is a book which raises issues and leaves you pondering long after closing the final page. It's a super gift for friends and relations who have visited or intend to visit this area of France, or who just love the French atmosphere of small villages and towns. What a great present for someone who cannot travel this year!
Catherine also recently published a book of short stories called, Moving Pictures. Some of the stories are prize-winners, others reflect her love of the Lake District and the final story is based on a childhood memory at the time of the moon landings.
About the Author
Catherine Finch lives in Castanet, which is a tiny village on the Tarn et Garonne/Aveyron border. She started writing novels when she retired from her role as a primary school headteacher to move to France in 2013. So far, she has published three novels and a book of short stories. As a keen walker, she completed the Camino de Santiago in 2019 with a friend. They started in Castanet and tackled the long trek during a number of holidays over four years.
'Setting out to walk the Camino was daunting,' Catherine says. 'Yet as we found our rhythm, we settled in to arranging two holidays a year, usually in spring and autumn. Driving to the starting points became more of a challenge the further away from home we got, but we never saw this as a setback. I met amazing people from all corners of the world, slept in huge mixed dormitories, marvelled at some stunning scenery and carried all my own belongings. It was a challenging and unforgettable experience and I am grateful for sturdy legs, tough feet and a stalwart companion.'
